This model train collection began when one of my Scouting friends mentioned Lionel issued a "Boy Scouts 'Scout
Law' Add-on Boxcar" in 2009. I decided to investigate. Found out this was the first of many BSA-licensed items
that Lionel would be issuing for the 2010 BSA Centennial. I decided to purchase it. And then in 2010 Lionel issued
a lot of BSA Centennial items. I figured it would end in 2011. It didn't! Lionel issued BSA items through 2014.
Not only was Lionel authorized to issue BSA Centennial and other items, but Bradford Exchange was also approved to
do so. However, the Bradford Exchange items are HO scale and only available as a subscription - which I ended up
subscribing to!
Fast forward to May 2013:
The Lionel 2013 Signature Edition catalog displayed a series of "U.S. Made: Armed Forces" freight cars.
In honor of my 24 years in the US Air Force, I decided to purchase the set of 3 Air Force freight cars (boxcar,
flatcar, and tank car). However, just having three freight cars and nothing appropriately-related to pull them
with, I went in search of a suitable locomotive and hopefully a suitable caboose. Luckily I found both: A set
from 2011 honoring President George Bush 41. I also found a couple other US Air Force cars to compliment the
latest three freight cars.
Fast forward again – this time to fall 2013:
The Lionel 2012 Signature Edition catalog displayed a series of Alaska Railroad locomotives. I have a passionate
love for Alaska. While in the Air Force, I spent 5 years in Alaska at Eielson AFB which is 26 miles SE of
Fairbanks. Seeing those locomotives got me wondering, could I put together an Alaskan Railroad train? A little
investigative work on the Lionel product finder web page showed over 50 Alaskan Railroad issues! I was hooked.
So now my Lionel collection includes not only BSA and US Air Force item, but also items bearing the Alaska
Railroad name!
Another fast forward again – this time to early 2014:
Happened to see something that previously Lionel had issued a set of 50 boxcars - one for each state, plus a
1776 locomotive and accompanying caboose in honor of our country's bicentennial.
Thought about purchasing the entire set until I found out it was not cheap - $3,000 for the entire set. Didn't
want to pay that kind of money for something I couldn't set up in my small apartment so I wondered if I could
at least purchase a box car for each state I've spent more than a couple of years in - those states being:
Wisconsin (born there); Alaska (stationed there 5 years); Alabama (lived here 16 years!); Washington (where I'm
currently living); and Idaho (a beautiful state where I recreate). Found out I could. So my collection now
included these states plus the 1776 locomotive and accompanying caboose.
May 2015 – here we go again!
Got notification from eBay the Alabama box car was being auctioned! Bid and won! Found out the seller had a lot
of other items I might be interested. So further investigation and ended up buying the complete set of box cars
in honor of Joshua Lionel Cowen's 100th anniversary of his birth! Plus some State Quarter cars to match the
"I Love U.S.A." cars.
Fall 2015:
I have always had a fascination with Schnabel Flatcars. Found out MTH Electric Trains would be issuing two
different Schnabel Flatcars in fall of 2015. They are used for transporting very large items – oversized
transformers, large generators as well as parts for nuclear reactor plants. They are unique in that the item
they transport is actually part of the car. The car is transported as a whole to the loading location where it
is split into two parts with the item being transported as the middle part of the car. The car can be well over
100 feet in length and can weigh as much as 2 million pounds – including the weight of the item being transported.
The car is so large it requires special routing including a physical inspection of the entire route to ensure
clearance of any trackside obstacles. In case there are trackside accessories that cannot be moved, the item
being transported can be moved four feet vertically and/or horizontally to ensure clearances. It requires a
special train moving not more than 40 MPH!
Having purchased a Schnabel Flatcar, I purchased a couple of other flatcars to show how smaller items are carried.
November 2019:
Received an inheritance. Time to clear out my list of "wanted items".
This web page shows the model train items in my collection starting with K-Line (including K-Line catalogs) items
followed by Lionel items (including Lionel catalogs and K-Line by Lionel items) followed by MTH Electric Trains
items (and catalogs) followed by Kris Model Trains (KMT) followed by Weaver then followed by Williams by Bachmann
then followed by Bradford Exchange (Boy Scouts of America® "100 Years Of Scouting" Express) items
and Bachmann HO items and finally miscellaneous items. In each section items are listed by their catalog number.
Train Collection Themes:
In spite of what it may look like, I collect only items that have specific themes, such as:
Alaska; Boy Scouts; Civil War; Lionel-related; Midwest/Milwaukee; NASA; Peanuts (comic),
State Quarter Series; USA; USAF / Military / Veterans; and World War II
I don't collect every item in each of the themes.
"This railroad under Construction" means I will be updating this page as I add items to my collection.

K-Line Items – Sorted by Catalog Number
K-Line was a manufacturer of model trains founded in 1975 by Maury D. Klein.
The company filed for bankruptcy in October 2005.
In February 2006, Lionel announced it had purchased K-Line.
For several years Lionel produced K-Line items under the name of
"K-Line by Lionel".
Sometime after 2010 the K-Line line of trains
was merged into the Lionel product line.
Both the "Minute Man" and the "Defense Special" were part of Defense Exhibit Trains of World War II.
These trains traveled around the country to manufacturing centers to help manufacturers determine
whether they could do defense work. Each eight car train had six exhibit cars and two cars with
living quarters for the staff of 36. These 18 inch Heavyweights replicate 72 foot cars and feature
fully furnished interiors with figures, patented overhead StreamLighting, die cast six-wheel trucks
and diaphragms. Choose from New York Central, Southern Railway or Chicago & Alton. Each of these
colorful sets reminds us of the days of luxury rail travel when time moved slower and everyone
enjoyed the journey, not just the destination.

In 1986 Lionel issued a new series called "the Fallen Flags".
The Fallen Flags are named so because they commemorate railroads
that were merged into other systems. In all seven Fallen Flags
sets were produced between 1986 and 1993, and one was catalogued
every year except 1990.
This website
contains information
about the entire Fallen Flag Series.
I was raised in Milwaukee so decided to collect

K-Line by Lionel Items – Sorted by Catalog Number
K-Line was a manufacturer of model trains founded in 1975 by Maury D. Klein.
The company filed for bankruptcy in October 2005.
In February 2006, Lionel announced it had purchased K-Line.
For several years Lionel produced K-Line items
under the name of "K-Line by Lionel".
Sometime after 2010 the K-Line line of trains was merged
into the Lionel product line.
Superstreets (K-Line by Lionel)
Superstreets was a product line developed by K-Line
to provide a realistic-looking place to run trolleys and other vehicles.
In addition to providing a realistic-looking street/track,
K-Line developed additional items to connect to the Lionel Fastrack system.
Since I have purchased some trolleys, I thought it would be better
to provide a realistic-looking place to run them

Freedom Train (TMCC Alco PA Diesel #1776) (6-21791)
The 1947-1949 American Freedom Train (AFT) was a 7-car train
led by an Alco PA-1 locomotive.
Its 37,160 mile tour lasted from September 17, 1947 to January 22, 1949.
It operated in every state (48 at the time) using 52 different railroads.
Over 3 million people (officially, 3,521,841) went aboard the Train
during its display stops in 326 cities and towns across the land.
At many sites, people waited in line more than six hours to go aboard.
The highest single-day attendance was 14,615.
Lionel produced TWO different sets which together consistes of the

Merchants Dispatch Transit Hot Box Reefer (6-29811)
From the Lionel website:
When a wheel bearing overheats it causes the brakeman's nightmare known as a hot box.
The scenario begins with an irregular sound and a whiff of smoke.
Crew dialog keeps you on top of the situation with reports such as "Somethings burning!"
and we've got a blazer! Smoke, lights, and screeching intensify until you, the engineer,
initiate an emergency stop to let your crew cool that spindle.

Freedom Train Heavyweight Passenger Car 3-Pack (6-39085)
The 1947 Freedom Train was conceived as an opportunity to reflect on the meaning
of American citizenship at a time when the nation was finding a new
and central role in world affairs. Americans had experienced a decade of pre-war
economic Depression. They made sacrifices in foreign lands throughout World War II.
They were entering an age of post-war prosperity with opportunities unknown
in all of human history. And they were unsure of the reassurances at the sudden dawn
of the nuclear age and Soviet expansion into countries just liberated
from fascist oppression in Europe and Asia.
With President Harry Truman in the lead, some in the national government
believed Americans should pause and reflect, to experience a "rededication"
to the principles that founded their country.
President Truman loved trains, and his use of the "whistle stop" campaign train
still epitomizes this icon of the electoral process. Attorney General Tom Clark
and his staff proposed a train that would travel to communities in every state of the nation,
taking with it dozens of "documents of liberty."
The result, they hoped, would enable Americans to rediscover for themselves just how hard-won
their freedoms were. Clearly, they hoped to enable personal reconciliations with the still-fresh
sacrifices and human costs of war, and to impart a sense of meaning and worth to those sacrifices.

Philadelphia Double Sheathed Boxcar (LOTS) (6-83862)
Special issue for the Lionel Operating Train Society (LOTS)
Background on this car:
2016 celebrates the 240th anniversary of America's independence from England. After hostilities broke out
at Lexington and Concord in 1775, the 2nd Continental Congress convened in Philadelphia, PA with
representatives from all 13 colonies. Some of the brightest political minds of all time moved quickly to
draft the Declaration of Independence. Adopted on July 4, 1776, the Declaration made the case for the
"inalienable rights" that we enjoy today. After the Articles of Confederation proved to be an
unworkable form of government representatives from the original 13 states returned to Philadelphia in 1787
and adopted the U.S. Constitution the following year. There can be little doubt that these groundbreaking
events earned Philadelphia the title of "Cradle of Liberty."
LOTS is proud to honor Philadelphia and its patriotic roots with a highly collectible Standard O-Scale
double-sheathed boxcar. This striking, all Lionel-manufactured car is 11-1/2" long and features opening
doors, die-cast sprung trucks and operating couplers, simulated wood-sheathed exterior, and steam era
fishbelly-style underframe with separately applied metal details. Operates on 0-31 and larger curves.

The story behind the "Billups Crossing Gate":
The Billups Neon Crossing Signal was a prototypical grade crossing signal installed
at a dangerous Illinois Central crossing on Mississippi Highway 7
(now Mississippi Highway 332) in Grenada, Mississippi.
It was installed in the mid-1930s by inventor Alonzo Billups over growing concern
due to numerous accidents at the crossing involving trains and motor vehicles.
Like nothing before, the Billups signal was a large gantry spanning the highway
and was likely the first such use of a gantry-style crossing of the type now
in relatively common use. Upon approach of a train, a giant neon sign lit up
with the words "Stop-DEATH-Stop" beneath a lighted skull and crossbones.
Flashing neon arrows indicated the direction of oncoming trains and an air raid siren
in lieu of bells provided aural warning. As a backup, standard railway flashers
were mounted below the neon sign. The signal was known locally as the "Skull and Crossbones."
The onset of World War II brought about a scarcity of neon which, when coupled with
maintenance problems with the signal (often manifesting themselves in the siren sounding
continuously until a crew arrived to stop it) meant that no further signals were produced.
The prototype was removed after less than thirty years of service,
being replaced with standard railway crossing flashers and bells.

The story behind the "Weather" Balloon Defense 2-pack:
On April 1st, Lionel posted this 2-car set as a joke to the Chinese spy balloon.
Lionel was flooded with e-mails inquiring about the availability of the set.
Based upon the response, Lionel decided to go ahead and produce the set.

MTH Electric Trains (Premier) Items - Sorted by Catalog Number
Thirty-five years ago, the three rail O gauge hobby consisted mainly of restoring
and running postwar Lionel® trains. Thirty-six years ago, the most elaborate
way to run three-rail trains was a rebuilt ZW transformer. Thirty-five years ago,
a twenty-year-old named Mike Wolf opened a toy train mail order business in a
bedroom of his parents' home. At train shows, customers approaching his table didn't
realize he was the business owner, and often asked to speak with his father.

Merger Series Freight Car Sets
In 1999, MTH began a series of "Merger Series Freight Car Sets".
This on-going series covered the many mergers that America's railroads
have been involved in over the years.
Each series spans several catalogs depending on how many railroads
were swallowed up by the final railroad during its acquisition of other roads.
While its predecessors numbered more than 350 roadnames,
the Burlington Northern Railroad wasn't actually created until 1970
by the merger of four primary railroads - the CB&Q,
Northern Pacific, Great Northern, and the Spokane, Portland and Seattle.
Since then, two additional roadnames have been added to the series -
The Frisco and the Atchinson, Topeka & Santa Fe.

Spirit of Union Pacific SD70ACe Diesel & Caboose Set (30-20520-1)
On October 19, 2017, the Union Pacific Railroad revealed a commemorative locomotive
honoring the U.S. Armed Forces at San Antonio's Sunset Station. Only the 16th
commemorative locomotive presented in Union Pacific's 155-year history, UP No.
1943's arrival was welcomed by a group of veterans to kick off its Salute to the
Military Tour, a series of community displays across Union Pacific's network.
The locomotive's unique livery is based on the schemes and colors from each branch
of the U.S. Military and is a recognition on the railroad's part of the military
service of many Union Pacific employees. In fact, 17 percent of UP employees have
served in the military - one of the reasons the Union Pacific has been recognized
in the Best Companies for Veterans Top 10 list the last two years running.
Here's what the locomotive graphics represent:
Here's what the locomotive looks like in the "real" world!
MTH also released a series of box cars – both "40' High Cube" and
"50' Dbl. Door Plugged" – which are listed below
(I opted to collect only the "40' High Cube").

Kris Model Trains (KMT) Items
Kris Model Trains (KMT) were manufactured and sold by Andy Kriswalus of Endicott,
New York from 1968 to 1982. Kris made boxcars, gondolas, refrigerator cars,
stock cars, track, and railroad logoed coasters.
Andy Kriswalus, who had worked at IBM and was an avid collector of Lionel trains,
purchased much of the tooling from Kusan/KMT in 1967 when the company
went out of business.
Shortly thereafter, he began producing a line of 'O' gauge rolling stock
under the Kris Model Trains name. Kris Model Trains, also called KMT,
only produced the box, stock, gondolas, and refrigerator cars from the
Kusan dies, in a very wide assortment of road names and liveries,
most emphasizing and representing mid-eastern and central US lines
that ran in the local vicinity. On many of these cars Kris mounted
die-cast trucks made from the Kusan tooling.
Lionel trucks were also utilized on the freight cars.
All cars were assembled by hand.
Kris was known for producing short runs of custom decorated cars
for train clubs and businesses.
He even created a boxcar for the Boy Scouts of America.

R&L Lines
From the R&L Lines website:
As a child I loved model trains. My favorite was and still is the Santa Fe.
As I get older I still have a passion for this hobby and am happy to share it with my family and friends.
But, as all model railroad enthusiasts know, it is hard to keep the tracks clean.
There was nothing on the market that I felt was affordable and actually worked.
To solve my problem, and after much trial and error, I developed the first track scrubbing car.
I am proud to have designed an affordable hand made track scrubbing car that actually cleans the tracks.
In 2006 I started R&L Lines to share my invention with other model railroad enthusiasts.
Currently my track scrubbing cars are sold at over 20 retailers across the United States and Canada.

Ready Made Trains/Toys (RMT) Items
RMT products feature high quality but affordably priced 0-27/0 gauge trains
for the toy train operator or collector.
If you remember those toy trains that held a special appeal
under the Christmas tree of your youth... do not worry as RMT also remembers.
Using many years of actual prototype railroading experience combined with
21st Century manufacturing ability will allow RMT to offer what many toy train hobbyists
are calling the best 0-27 gauge toy trains available in today's marketplace.
RMT products features colorful paint schemes in those many railroads
that crossed America... with names that were a geography lesson (remember geography?)
as you read the boxcars that rolled by.
Set up a toy train layout on the floor, get down close and watch those trains run by.
Close your eyes and remember how it was when you were a child operating your toy trains.
The RMT brand offers a wide assortment of toy trains, tracks, buildings and accessories
to share this wonderful hobby with your children, grandchildren, family and friends.
Rather than just offer 3 or 4 roadnames in a freight car...the RMT brand offers different RRs
in every car type so you can choose shortlines, regional favorites or mainline giants.
Each railroad depicted on an RMT locomotive, passenger car or freight car is a realistic model
of the 'real thing'. Fully painted in each railroad's colors with logos and lettering that recreate
the prototype but in model form.
We like trains and have spent many years 'on the railroad'.
