Captain John Nickerson was born 10 September 1664 in Yarmouth (now South Dennis), Massachusetts to Nicholas Nickerson and Mary Derby Nickerson. He married Elizabeth Baker in Yarmouth in 1696 and they had 9 children.
He was a sea captain, and chose the site of his home so that he could sail up the Bass River in his schooner, drop anchor when it got too shallow, row the rest of the way through what is still called Nickerson's Cove, then walk the remaining 200 feet or so to his house.
He built two homes in the South Dennis area--the first at 248 Main Street, just north of the "Sea Captain's Church" and the other directly across the street from the church at 215 Main Street. He only lived in the second one a short time before he died and when he died, his youngest son, Eleazer inherited it. His oldest son, John inherited the first house. That house stayed in the Nickerson family for 230 years, being sold to someone outside the family in 1960.
He died in 1745 and is probably buried at the Ancient Burial Ground in South Dennis.

Nicholas Nickerson married first, about 1655, a woman whose name is unknown, but may have been a daughter of William Bassett. He married second, about 1663, Mary Derby or Darby. She was born about 1644, daughter of John and Alice (maiden named unknown) Derby or Darby. Some researchers believe that Mary was his only wife, but she would have been too young to have all his children and likely was the mother of his last five children.
