2002 marked the 50th birthday of Matchbox. To commemorate this special event, Mattel releases a special model for each of the 50 states of the US.
Each model came individually packed in a blister pack with a License plate depicting the two letter state abbreviation and the a three digit number
showing the order in which the state joined the Union. There were 50 models arranged in 4 different groups. Collectors could send 5 proof of purchases
from any one region to Mattel and receive a specially marked Regional model. Also, by sending 40 proof of purchases will get you a specially marked
"Washington DC" model. These mail order models were not be available in the retail stores.
Some specially marked models were released for Puerto Rico, Guam, Canada, & Mexico. Canada and Mexico models were exclusive to Toy R Us while
Puerto Rico and Guam models were exclusive to K-Mart stores. Distribution varied based upon the store location. Also, later in the year toysrus.com
sold an exclusive 50 model set along with a display case. Target sold a
License Plate Slide Holder
in the early part of 2002 so that collectors can display the license plates.
